Success on Screen

In an environment in which reputation is strongly influenced by web and new media content, it is important that academics can communicate effectively about their work on camera.

Live or recorded video material that is clear and compelling has a positive impact on the way web visitors and social media users perceive the speaker, the subject and the institution. By the same token, lacklustre material can blunt audiences’ interest.

Getting it right is not easy: the camera can seem like the barrel of a gun and make the speaker very nervous; and it can act like a microscope, revealing small habits that distract the viewer. Expert training can transform people’s ability to communicate effectively on screen – to manage nerves, achieve clarity, hold audiences’ attention and do justice to their subject matter.

Success on Screen involves a lively mix of discussion, demonstration, exercises, rehearsal, on-camera practice and feedback. Content will be refined and designed in consultation with the client. Likely topics that will be explored include:

  • Confidence on camera
  • Demystifying the technology
  • Engaging different audiences
  • Clarity of message
  • Using stories effectively and achieving narrative impact
  • Voice quality
  • Body language and gesture
  • Finding an effective and authentic style
  • Structuring content
  • Rehearsing for success

Participants will come away from the course with a short film already made and the confidence and enthusiasm to produce more video content for a variety of purposes. In addition the skills they acquire or develop will be transferable to other, off-camera contexts.
